Since its introduction in 1985, the M12 connector has grown into one of the preferred interconnection systems in industrial automation. These rugged and durable connectors provide reliable connections even in harsh environments, bringing a major advancement to interconnection technology in industrial automation.


The M12 connector is a circular connector with a 12 mm locking thread and typically offers IP-rated protection against the ingress of liquids and solids. It is an ideal choice for sensors, actuators, industrial Ethernet, and fieldbus equipment, and is widely used in industrial automation and corrosive environments.

Before the M12 connector was developed, engineers often had to hardwire systems directly or repeatedly replace connectors because of difficult operating conditions. The earliest M12 connectors were available in 3-pin and 4-pin versions. Although their maximum current capability was lower than that of the earlier RK30 connector, they provided IP67 protection. The 4-pin M12 connector made it possible to integrate more advanced sensors and actuators into a single system. Today, these rugged connectors are available in 3-pin, 4-pin, 5-pin, 8-pin, and 12-pin configurations, with additional locking styles continuously being developed, such as bayonet and push-pull types.

As industrial automation has advanced, M12 connectors have become a widely recognized standard interface in factories and process systems. Their compact size, strong anti-vibration performance, and high environmental protection level make them highly suitable for modern automation equipment.

So today we will take a closer look at PUR cable materials. In Westlian cable products, PUR cables are usually black, and some are also available in orange. They are halogen-free and feature resistance to oil contamination, abrasion, and welding sparks.


PUR cable is one type of cable construction. PUR materials offer advantages such as oil resistance and wear resistance, while PVC is made from more conventional materials. Over recent years, polyurethane has become increasingly important in the cable industry. Within a certain temperature range, its mechanical properties are similar to rubber, while its combination of thermoplastic behavior and elasticity results in a TPE-like performance profile.



It offers excellent oil resistance, good toughness, abrasion resistance, cold resistance (low-temperature resistance), water resistance, aging resistance, acid and alkali resistance, weather resistance, long service life, UV resistance, and favorable energy release properties. It is suitable for oil-contaminated environments, low-temperature applications, and demanding industrial conditions.
